Maiñ Talḳhī-e-Hayāt Se Ghabrā Ke Pī Gayā
Overwhelmed by the Bitterness of Life, I Drank

maiñ talḳhī-e-hayāt se ghabrā ke pī gayā
Overwhelmed by the bitterness of life, I drank;
ġham kī siyāh raat se ghabrā ke pī gayā
Overwhelmed by the black night of sorrow, I drank.
kāñTe to ḳhair kāñTe haiñ is kā gila hī kyā
Thorns are just thorns, what complaint is there of them?
phūloñ kī vārdāt se ghabrā ke pī gayā
It was the assault of the flowers that overwhelmed me, so I drank.
📖Metaphorical & Poetic Meaning
This ghazal explores existential despair and the paradox that beauty and kindness can hurt more than cruelty.
The Central Theme:
The poet turns to intoxication (literal or metaphorical) not because of life's obvious hardships (thorns), but because of its deceptive kindnesses (flowers). The 'flowers' represent false hopes, betrayals disguised as love, or the cruelty of beauty that promises but never delivers.
