📖Metaphorical & Poetic Meaning
This ghazal by Mohsin Naqvi explores the themes of unwavering loyalty, the pain of loss, and the cruel paradoxes of love and destiny.
Couplet 1: Absolute Loyalty
The poet declares his complete devotion to the beloved. Even when others call for him with all their heart, he remains steadfast, telling them he belongs only to his beloved. This establishes the theme of unshakeable loyalty that runs through the entire ghazal.
Couplet 2: The Burden of Faithfulness
A powerful contrast is drawn between the poet and the rest of the world. While others can live happily despite 'centuries of transgressions,' the poet was ruined by just 'moments of loyalty.' This suggests that his faithfulness itself became his downfall—perhaps the beloved did not value or reciprocate his devotion.
Couplet 3: Acceptance and Desolation
When the poet finally accepts the certainty that the beloved will not return, he finds his only comfort in tears and sorrow. This is a state of complete emotional desolation where grief itself becomes a companion.
Couplet 4: Life Without the Beloved
The poet reflects on how the beloved's presence gave meaning to life itself. Now, in their absence, even a single moment feels unbearable. This captures the existential emptiness that follows the loss of love.
Couplet 5: The Paradox of Destiny
The final couplet presents a cruel paradox: attaining the beloved was never written in destiny, yet losing them is equally unbearable. The poet is trapped between an impossible desire and an intolerable loss—a state of perpetual suffering with no resolution.
