The World is a Children's Plaything Before Me

By Mirza Ghalib

مرزا غالب

بازیچۂ اطفال ہے دنیا مرے آگے ہوتا ہے شب و روز تماشا مرے آگے

Bāzīcha-e-Atfāl Hai Duniyā Mere Aage Hotā Hai Shab-o-Roz Tamāshā Mere Aage

The world is a children's plaything before me; Night and day, a spectacle unfolds before me.

📖Metaphorical & Poetic Meaning

This is one of Ghalib's most famous couplets, expressing a profound philosophical detachment from worldly affairs. The poet views the entire world as nothing more than a toy (bāzīcha) that children play with—trivial, temporary, and ultimately meaningless. The constant drama of life (shab-o-roz tamāshā) is just a spectacle that he observes with the wisdom of someone who has transcended worldly attachments.
